Position on Artificial Intelligence

I believe that AI is a great way to get started on an idea. I don’t think that we should use AI to generate content, as originality will be compromised, however, I do believe that AI is a great way to get our ideas rolling. I do acknowledge that not everyone is going to have these same opinions, and people will use AI in more sinister ways, such as plagiarizing content, but I also think that more menial tasks will be used for AI, and leave more room for creative thought.

AI in Schools

Should teachers modify how they assess students?

Answer: Yes, I believe that AI is only going to get more sophisticated as time goes on. Just like how the internet shifted the way we consume information, AI is the next step. When the internet became popular, we did not revert as a society and say that we should stick with our hardcopy books, instead we adapted to the situation, and now the world is more informed than ever. Of course this is a whole different discussion, but for the sake of the world moving forward, I believe that we should move forward with AI and try to adapt.

How do we adapt? We integrate it into our curriculum, get our students to actually use something like ChatGPT to research, but then get the students to use primary sources to either back up the claim by ChatGPT or disprove it. Try to get your students to do assignments that require more critical thinking versus opinion pieces that can easily be written up by ChatGPT.

What do you think falls under the category of legitimate use for AI in schools? It’s legitimate to use something like ChatGPT to do research, get started on an idea, and even write you the whole thing and try to correct it.

Where do you draw the line? We draw the line where the students cannot just use ChatGPT as a copy-and-paste method to hand in an assignment. They should be able to back up what they say using primary sources from reputable sources around the world.
