Equality, Equity, and Inclusion

This topic is important not only in the digital setting but in the world we live in. It shapes the way we perceive and strive for fairness and justice in society. I would like to share three examples as to how each of these principles would be implemented in a classroom/school setting and their relative consequences that could follow.

Equality: Equality is the idea that everyone should have the same rights, opportunities, and treatment regardless of their differences. Also known as “a level playing field”. An example would be in an outdoor Ed class, a teacher would provide the opportunity for all students in the class to participate in a camping trip. However, what is the limiting factor here? Yes, the students are able to participate, regardless of their background, however, will every student be able to really participate at their optimum? The answer is no. But why? Well, in order to go on a hike, you will need hiking boots, or a large backpack to carry supplies, or a tent to sleep in the wild. All of these supplies cost money and time to acquire them. Not all students have the necessary resources to have all of these supplies. So that being said, we try to go one step further, and try for equity as teachers.

Equity: Equity recognizes that people have different needs and challenges, and it aims to rectify historical and systemic injustices by providing the resources and support necessary to level the playing field. In the example above, one way to do this is for the school to provide the material necessary for the camping trip. Now the student won’t have the anxiety of having to provide the materials needed, especially those who come up with a lower socio-economic background. Now how can we take it a step further? Let’s talk about inclusion

Inclusion: Inclusion is the practice of ensuring that everyone, regardless of their differences, feels valued, respected, and included in all aspects of society. It’s not just about providing access but also creating an environment where diversity is celebrated and embraced. This is taking it beyond what we do at the local level, but now changing policy at the provincial or federal level where people are protected under the law. In the Outdoor Ed example, there is funding provided by the provincial government (rather than the school districts budget) that will help those with lower socio-economic backgrounds excel and not worry about materials required. The idea is to permeate these ideas throughout society and make it common place for all.
