This is a great two-player game that is extremely easy to teach, however, difficult to master! The gameplay is very similar to chess, so for those of you who enjoy chess, I think this is a great alternative!
Playtime: 15-20 mins
Type of Game: Board Game/Abstract
Player Count: 2
Complexity*: Light **
*The complexity scale goes as follows: Light, Medium-Light, Medium, Medium-Heavy, and Heavy. The scale is quite arbitrary, however, the way i think of it is: the thicker the rulebook, and more time consuming games will lean on the heavier side.
**I say light because it is very easy to teach. However, like I said, mastering it is quite difficult (like chess)
Objective: You are the master of your Dojo, and you have monks that are at your side trying to overtake your opponent’s Dojo. You win by either eliminating the opponent’s master, or getting your master to enter your opponent’s Dojo.
I have created a screencastify below on how to play the game!
Reflection On Progress
Disclaimer: Like I mentioned in my previous post, life is quite hectic with the two kiddos and balancing schoolwork, so I apologize for the late post! But I did it! Even if it’s a little late.
In terms of my progress through this inquiry project, I have moved myself away from using canva to explain my “How to Plays” via screencastify. I must say, it was a lot easier and faster creating this post compared to canva. I think canva is a great tool, and quite dynamic as it has so many features, but for my purpose, screencastify did the job. Showing people how to play a boardgame over a video versus using pictures makes the learning process a lot easier.
I also used a cool resource called Tabletopia.com. This website allows you to play certain board games, online for free! There is a paid subscription for $50 dollars a year if you want to play every single one, but even with the free subscription (which I have) I was able to play Onitama, which is a fairly popular game in the board gaming world. If you are keen to play board games online, you can also try boardgamearena.com, which has a similar concept to Tabletopia, except it does not have the same sandbox feel.

What a neat game! First of all, I really appreciate your ranking scale for the complexity of these board games – it’s easily interpreted and a lot nicer than an arbitrary numerical assessment. I also love the screencastify you created- it made your intro very engaging and it was helpful to see the layout of the game itself. Looks like a fun game overall, so thanks for sharing it!
Have you ever played Shogi? If not, it’s a Japanese strategy game that’s comparable to but much more complicated than chess! If you like strategy games you might enjoy it; here’s a link to an explanation site if you’re interested!
